500 pieces of white copy paper, cut into a 8.5” x 8.5” square and folded into a ‘fortune teller’

My paper sculpture is an ode to the whimsical tradition of making ‘fortune tellers’, sometimes called ‘cootie catchers’. Inspired by the countless hours spent folding and unfolding these tiny paper toys as a child, I set out to create a massive pile of 500 cootie catchers that captures their playful magic. Each cootie catcher is unique, each with their own possibility of having hand-drawn illustrations and cryptic phrases that invite the viewer to engage with them and contemplate the fortunes they hold.
